All Hallow’s Eve

All Hallow’s Eve. The most magical night of the year, a night of ghost stories and séances, when the Victorians believed that the veil that separates our world from the Otherworld is at its thinnest. This Halloween costume is a tribute to Edgar Allan Poe and all things Victorian and Gothic.

The costume started with the beautiful luminous Gothic skin from Tuli. The hat from Bare Rose was slightly modified by stretching the lace veil and “sunk” into the hair to avoid looking like a cocktail hat and to create the image of a veil pinned to the hair.

It can be difficult using all black textures for an outfit, as you can end up looking like a walking inkblot. Different saturations of black color in various parts of the gown gave it more definition.

The lace effect of the bodice was created by using the lace undershirt layer from Black China by Paper Couture. The bodice, from Black Veil by Bare Rose had lace details, so the combination of undershirt and shirt created the detailed lace pattern for the top of the bodice.

The bolero styled jacket has a “softer” black color and it’s prim collar and prim sleeves created a lovely silhouette reminiscent of Victorian era jackets.

For the gown’s skirt, I wanted to create the effect of layers and layers of rustling lace. The prim skirt with the long train from Divine SiSi by Nicky Ree was used and then additional left and right leg prims from the “straight” skirt option of the outfit.

For the waist detail, the rose and lace belt from Baiastice was modified by editing the linked parts of the belt to black, and leaving the dark crimson roses on the belt to give definition to the waist and to hide the prim skirt parts.

The addition of black lace gloves and a single red rose completed the outfit.
